Project Description
Early Learning Centre, Abu Dhabi UAE
Sited beautifully within the context of Western Abu Dhabi, is the newly proposed Early Learning Centre. Accommodating for approximately 120 children, the project provides specialised and distinctive rooms for the growth and development of young children.
The intention was to create a building which reiterates the concept of an Oasis in the dessert, with the design of a micro-climate to help shade the building from excessive heat.
Inspired to look like a resort centred around a lush backdrop, the building reflects a modern and luxurious feel with clear lines and recognizable elements that harmonize with the existing context. The low-lying rectangular form was favourable to create an intimate and friendly environment. Simple yet functional, the form and organization of interior spaces has been developed in direct response to the climate and landscape.
Internally, the entrance relates to an extensive corridor, for easy circulation and connectivity to the programmes located around the building. Here, the central corridor space incorporates a ‘pop-up’ roof to evoke a light filled and airy space.
A neutral tonal palette was favourable, as the external timber cladding sets a soothing and warm feel upon entry. The pattern of the dynamic façade relates back to the cultural context, with angles forming the Emirate slant.
The extensive floor to ceiling sliding doors and windows around the building, provide seamless indoor and outdoor flow, and spacious light filled areas for children. Strategically connecting each room to the external environment, the project allows natural ventilation and passive cooling to take place. Visual connectivity to the outdoors further enhances the child’s indoor learning experience.
